What you see - The Colonial Collections showroom at Begumpet, Hyderabad is a quaint furniture shop that seems just right in everything. The dark Burma teak of the furniture gives the place a comfortable, earthy feel. You walk in and see interesting furniture all around - a bright orange L shaped sofa, a low bed, centre tables, magazine racks along the wall and a bar unit along the rear end. A carefully done up shop window displays a beautiful single piece diwan. We see colors ranging from bright orange and fluorescent green to sober grays. Yet, the colors don’t look mismatched in the display.
What you get – At Colonial Collections you get customized and readymade home furniture. Almost all their furniture is made from Burma teak (some from sesame wood), exquisitely crafted to your taste and shipped from their Mumbai factory to your home. The wood and understated style of the furniture, together make sure that none of the stuff looks chunky or gaudy. Everything seems to be designed with great care and nothing looks generic or mass produced. The brand based at Mumbai claims that it creates pieces of art for your contemporary home. We have to agree, as the wood finish and styling does look both stylish and comfortable. The ingenious use of wood and the simple designs make this showroom score over many others.
The showroom has a range of furniture and design catalogues to help you pick the best pieces, prices and materials. They offer plenty of styles in cabinets, consoles, dining table sets, tables, desks, mirrors, coffee tables, centre tables, bed designs, L shaped sofas, diwans, magazine racks (Rs. 15,000 in sesame wood) etc. They even offer SOJI work (pattern on wood) on some of their pieces.
Pricing is often decided in conjunction with the lady in charge, Vandana Shete, and depends on how you choose to have your piece done. We did find a few readymade pieces on display and on discount. They were offering a bar unit in Burma teak worth Rs. 50,000 for Rs. 35000 and a centre table with magazine storage came for Rs. 38000. They take approximately two months to custom make and deliver your furniture, specialize in seating and attract clients from even neighboring states and districts to their showroom in Hyderabad.
Our verdict - This is the place to bring your special furniture needs and long cherished desires. They will turn your dream chairs and furniture into a classic art piece reality which even your children would want to inherit. Everything about the place is pleasant including the store help, the manager and even the parking space.
